Environmental Operation on Île Sainte-Marguerite

On June 28, 2022, a major environmental effort was undertaken on the island of Sainte-Marguerite, under the jurisdiction of the City of Cannes.

Garbage Collection from July 1st

As of July 1, 2022, all litter bins on the island have been removed, encouraging visitors and boaters to bring their trash back to the mainland.

Protection of the Natural and Cultural Treasure

This decision, taken under the aegis of David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, aims to preserve and enhance this protected natural and cultural area.

Reasons for Removing Recycle Bins

There are many reasons for this removal of the bins:

Reduction of Visual Pollution

Reduction of visual pollution caused by waste bins, thus contributing to the preservation of the island's exceptional natural setting.

Strengthening civic-mindedness

Increased civic-mindedness and collective awareness of the urgent need to reduce waste production.

Budget Savings

Generation, in the long term, of significant municipal budget savings, estimated at €340,000 per year. This amount includes the human and material resources needed to clean up the island, including the renewal of the bins and the logistics for transporting the waste to Cannes.

Awareness and Communication

To support this initiative and raise awareness among users, Cannes City Hall has launched a vast communication campaign in close collaboration with stakeholders in the tourism sector, such as tourist offices, port carriers, hotels, harbour masters' offices, and many others. Our company Horizon is also aware of the approach to protecting the islands by informing its travelers.

Previous Success on the Île Saint-Honorat

It should be noted that this major operation had already been successfully carried out on the neighbouring island of Saint-Honorat in 2019, achieving very positive results.

Commitment to Preservation

David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, stressed the importance of this action to preserve the Lérins archipelago as a natural and cultural treasure of Cannes' heritage.
The removal of the bins from Île Sainte-Marguerite is part of the actions undertaken by the municipality to protect the environment, reduce waste and raise awareness of good citizenship.
